Figma RPG is a fully interactive turn-based battle simulator created entirely in Figma with no code or plugins. Players can select from a number of unique attacks and items to strategically defeat their opponent, who will fight back with their own attacks.

Objective

I’m always looking for unique and interesting ways to push myself to the limit when it comes to my design work. Figma RPG one of these endeavors, using variables and advanced prototyping to create a fully functional game in a UI software.

This originally started as a side mode for a larger class project. The idea was to use Figma's variables and conditionals to create a boss battle, but due to time constraints, the mode was never finished, and was later adapted into its own thing.

Process

Figma RPG started as nothing more than a few assets and rudimentary buttons in a debug menu. This helped me test how to use variables for altering the attack, defense, and health stats of both the player and opponent.

Version 1 of Figma RPG featured a more refined UI, but was still mainly built for testing and debugging.

This was the first version to be fully playable and winnable (or losable) with functional buttons, actions, and conditionals.

Version 2 completely overhauls the UI, gearing the experience for mobile and adding new aesthetic features such as an intro, stat screens, and visible damage indicators.

This version is the most up to date. Potential future inclusions could include more moves and items, advanced animations, and status effects.
