Scan n’ Stick

Objective

Year

2024

As a Rochester native, one of my favorite aspects of the city is the unique mural art scene. Despite the prominence of murals in Rochester, it has always seemed like a rather niche part of the culture, other than organizations like Wall Therapy. This experience aims to connect people to wall art culture, while also expanding the art scene of the greater Rochester area.

Scan n’ Stick is an interactive mobile sticker collecting game concept designed to connect users to the mural and wall art scene of the greater Rochester area and expand the Rochester art scene as a whole.

Solution

Scan n’ Stick motivates users to seek out and learn about Rochester murals via sticker collecting. Users can scan real murals to learn more about them in augmented reality, before collecting the murals as a virtual stickers. Users can also upload their own art and images as stickers to place around a virtual map, almost like a virtual tagging system.

Concept Inspiration

Scan n’ Stick is derived from games like Pokèmon GO, where players physically move in the real world to move an avatar across a virtual map on their phone. Another important aspect is sticker collecting and posting, derived from applications like Figjam or Apple iMessage which allow you to share stickers.

In regards to Scan n’ Stick, real world murals and wall art will be displayed on the virtual map where they would be in the real world. Instead of Pokèmon, the collectables would be virtual stickers, obtained by tapping the virtual marker and scanning the real mural in AR.

Aesthetic Inspiration

I aimed to incorporate an upbeat, urban style with wavy, heavily drop shadowed type indicative of murals in downtown Rochester, specifically those of civic artist Shawn Dunwoody.

Competitive Analysis

Many Niantic Games. such as Pokèmon GO, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now do very well financially. Scan n’ Stick aims to create a similar experience, using a virtual map and augmented reality to create a fun mobile gaming expeirence, but with the added benefits of history, education, and art.
